Today, Merle and Roy were bursting with energy. Sometimes high energy can be a good thing and sometimes it can be a bad thing. Today, it was definitely a good thing.

Most days I prefer to work the boys when they are a little bit tired because in general, steers tend to be more focused and more willing to listen when their energy is low. At the same time, it is also important to constantly switch up their routine so they get used to working regardless of their energy levels or what time of day it is. Tired or not, they were very focused today!
The tire below was originally frozen solid into the ground. They yanked it free and pulled an additional fifty pound grain bag through the snow. For their size, it may not be much, but progress is progress and soon enough I hope for them to be pulling some serious weight! 
Roy still thinks that since my hair is the color of hay, it MUST taste like hay. Right?
Before today’s training, Merle and Roy were completely wound up. When the boys get this hyper, they often butt heads and “play fight.” I find that the Jersey breed exhibits this behavior much more often than most other breeds I’ve encountered. This play is harmless enough, but if they try it on people it can be very dangerous, especially once their horns fully develop. For this reason, I have made it a serious point to make sure they know NOT to “play fight” with people.

Lastly, after a VERY early shift at work, my boyfriend, Steve, volunteered to come help me with all of today’s training. Luckily, he enjoys these kinds of things as much as I do!
